2009: DaVinci Robot: After prolonged negotiations, we were successful in arranging for the longterm loan of a DaVinci “S” robot, which was installed in March, 2009. The list price of this robot (I believe) is approximately $1.5‐$2M. I was instrumental in persuading ISI to make this loan and I am the lead faculty member in our continuing agreement with ISI in managing the equipment. I am also the PI/Director for the “cost center” associated with the system. In addition to several joint research projects with ISI for which I am the PI, the system is already being used by other faculty for funded research, both with ISI and others, as well as for student course projects. It has also been used for a number of Development activities, including a WSE reception with President Daniels, the annual WSE Christmas Card, and many tour events.
2009: CISST ERC Director: I am not sure where to put this, but it still represents a significant effort and activity.  The NSF "core" grant for the ERC finished in 2009, and we produced the final NSF report. Most financial operations (grant management, etc.) have been folded into LCSR. However, the ERC does continue to exist as an internationally recognized organizational entity and focus for CISST-related research at JHU, as well as a focus for sustaining research infrastructure, for which it retains a separate budget. Over 2009, I spent considerable time on both the "external relations" and "infrastructure" missions of the ERC, as well as continuing to develop industry collaborations and research opportunities, both for myself and for other faculty. Typical external events included a technology demonstration/poster session under NSF auspices in the US Senate Hart Office Building and an NPR radio piece on our medical robotics work on microsurgery (for which I am also technical leader) and MRI prostate biopsy (Whitcomb, Fichtinger). Examples of industry collaborations include a small project with Blue Torch Technologies for the DaVinci robot (currently led by Rajesh Kumar and Peter Kazanzides) and several collaborations with Philips Research, including a Philips Fellowship for my student, Paul Thienphrapa
2012 - 2013: WSE Implementation Committee for "Leveraging Data"
2009 - 2013: Richard Swirnow Mock Operating Room: I am the “Principal Investigator” / Director for the Swirnow Room, which was named to acknowledge a generous $1M gift from Mr. Swirnow, of which $400,000 is pledged for direct support of activities in the room. During 2009, I conducted numerous tours and demonstrations in the room, in support of WSE and JHU Central Development, and also maintained contact with Mr. Swirnow. One significant highlight for 2009 was the installation of an Intuitive Surgical DaVinci “S” telesurgical robot. NOTE: I'm putting this here because there doesn't seem to be an obvioous place within Folio for things of this nature. It is not really a committee.
